Are you an overseas Filipino worker or do you have any relatives working or living abroad? Kung oo, ikasasaya mo ang bagong batas na ipapatupad sa customs sa airport. Balikbayan boxes are now tax and duty free! This is to lessen and avoid cases such as corruption and smuggling and unwanted or unexpected tax rates. Hindi na rin masyadong bubusisiin ang iyong mga padala.
This development is under the Customs Modernization Act (CMTA) or Republic Act 10863 signed last May 31, 2016. This increases the tax exemption ceiling of balikbayan goods from 10,000 to 150,000.
For Filipinos who had stayed up to 6 months but less than five years abroad, the tax-free ceiling is increased to 150,000. Meanwhile, for those who was out of the country for 5 years but less than 10 years, you can enjoy up to 250,000 pesos tax-free ceiling. Lastly, if you have stayed abroad for 10 years and above, you will be tax exempted for balikbayan goods amounting to 350,000.
OFW and tourist alike can also enjoy a duty free on-hand or carry-on pasalubongs with the tax ceiling increase to 150,000 as well.
The Bureau of Customs hopes that the people do not abuse the new law and advises them to avoid carrying huge amounts of the same product that can be used for retail to avoid inconvenient.
